Beaches and Water Activities
With the sea on its doorstep, Malaga makes water part of any visit. From the city sand to coves and kayak trips, here is how to cool off.
City beaches
La Malagueta is the main city beach, a short walk from the cathedral and handy for a swim between sights. For something with more character, head east to Pedregalejo and El Palo, where smaller beaches sit beside the chiringuitos grilling espetos all day.
The prettiest coves
The coast east of Malaga turns rocky and scenic around Nerja and Maro, where small coves with clear water hide below the cliffs. Maro beach and its neighbours are some of the most photogenic swimming spots on the whole Costa del Sol and worth the drive.
Kayaking and snorkelling
Guided kayak and snorkel trips run along the cliffs near Nerja and the Cerro Gordo natural park, paddling past sea caves and into hidden inlets you cannot reach on foot. The water is calm and clear in summer, making it a great half day for active travelers.
Boat trips and sunsets
Catamaran and sailing trips leave from Malaga port for a few hours on the water, often with a swim stop and a sunset return. It is a relaxed way to see the coastline from the sea and a fine alternative to another afternoon on the sand.
Planning a beach day
The sea is warmest from June to October, and the eastern coves stay quieter than the western resorts. Bring water shoes for the pebbly coves, arrive early in August for a parking spot and keep the midday hours for lunch in the shade.
