Best Areas to Stay in Malaga Centro
If it is your first trip, stay in the historic center. Everything worth seeing in the city sits within a fifteen minute walk and the train station is close for day trips.
Why the old town wins
The center packs the Alcazaba, the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and Calle Larios into a compact, mostly pedestrian core. You can drop your bags, walk out the door and be standing in front of a Roman theatre within minutes. For a short city break this density is hard to beat anywhere else on the coast.
Soho and the port
Just south of the old town, the Soho district has turned into the creative quarter with street art, design hotels and a calmer feel at night. From here it is a flat stroll along the Muelle Uno promenade to the port, the marina restaurants and the small city beach at La Malagueta.
La Merced and the east
The Plaza de la Merced area is leafy, local and home to Picasso's birthplace. Rents are a little softer here than on Calle Larios and you are still inside the walkable core. It suits travelers who want atmosphere without paying the premium of the main shopping street.
Getting around without a car
You will not need a car in the center. The MarÃa Zambrano station links to the AVE high speed line and to the CercanÃas commuter train that runs down the coast to Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Buses to the airport leave every twenty minutes and a taxi to the terminal takes about fifteen minutes.
What to book early
Rooms with a cathedral or rooftop view and the boutique hotels around Calle Granada sell out fast in spring and autumn. If you want a balcony over the old town, reserve well ahead. Look for places between the cathedral and Plaza de la Merced for the best balance of quiet and walkability.
Frequently asked questions
Is Malaga centro safe at night?
Yes. The historic core is busy and well lit late into the evening, with families and locals out at the tapas bars. Use the usual care with bags in crowded squares and you will be fine.
Do I need a car if I stay in the center?
No. The center is walkable and the train and bus network covers the airport and the coastal towns. A car is only worth it for inland day trips like Ronda or Caminito del Rey.
How far is the beach from the old town?
La Malagueta city beach is a ten minute walk from the cathedral. It is not the prettiest sand on the coast but it is handy for a quick swim between sightseeing.
